an interview with Svenda Scholey
Action Life Experience
Are you from West Kent?
No. I was born and brought up with five brothers in the West Midlands, with a few years in Telford in my teens. I moved South East, to Southend in fact, to begin my first professional career in IT. My IT career finally brought me to Hadlow at the start of this millennium.
So, how did you get into life coaching?
In Italy at the start of this decade, on a brief and well-earned holiday, I met an Australian who was training to be a Life Coach. "What's a Life Coach?" I asked. Intrigued and most interested by their answer, I decided to find out more. The rest, as they say, is history.
I began my training as a Professional Coach, knew I had found my new future career and further trained in specialist areas such as NLP and Performance Coaching. I thoroughly enjoy the continuous professional development that goes with the job.
What is your current professional status?
I am now a self-employed Professional Coach, my personal coaching practice is Action Coach Experience (www.actioncoachexperience.com) and I specialise in Performance Coaching. I am also a founder member of an exiting business venture - The Art of Coaching (www.theartofcoaching.co.uk) an association of elite, highly-professional coaches with a rich portfolio of experience and coaching specialists, providing coaching services to the business world.
In a nutshell, what is coaching?
Coaching is a very powerful way of creating the future you truly want - in your business of personal life. In a coaching experience, you, the client, are centre stage - it is your agenda, you know that your future is in your hands and you know that your coach is there for you to stimulate your thinking, so that you discover your way to create your own reality.
Through coaching, you achieve a much better sense of quite what you want, what you need to be different, what you need to do to succeed and how to make it all happen - coaching delivers results.
What does the future hold for your industry?
Life Coaching is a rapidly growing profession - so watch out for the cowboys out there. Acceditation of coaches by professional standards organisations (like the Association for Coaching) is emerging and they are all working hard to establish that professional framework to ensure the reputation of the coaching profession.
What are your business challenges?
It is in the nature of coaching that I have to continually attract new clients. Typically, an individual coaching engagement lasts a couple of months or so. That the individual is confident to continue moving forward without a coach is a testament to the success of the experience. Business coaching engagements vary in nature - from creating a business vision to coaching skills training and lots in between. Typically, they are relatively short-term engagements.
How do you relax?
I love reading and escape into all sorts of books. I've recently joined a gym and, to my surprise, am having lots of fun among the hard work. I love music and walking - well, strolling really - around the country lanes. I love to laugh and thoroughly enjoy dancing with life - even when life throws in some very interesting moves.
